Lexicography workshop of tribal dialects begins

Imphal, October 11 : A three-day long workshop on lexicography of tribal dialects of Manipur was formally inaugurated today at Nirmala Hotel here under the aegis of Sahitya Akademi and Writers' Forum, Imphal.

The inaugural function was graced by convenor of Manipuri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi Prof N Khagendra, and president of Writers' Forum, Imphal IS Kangjam as the chief guest and president respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof N Khagendra said Sahitya Akademi gives equal importance to all languages of India.

However, there have been instances which seem like the Sahitya Akademi is playing the role of colonialism in its attempt to promote the languages of the country.

He conveyed that he himself has on some occasions registered stiff opposition to the approach adopted by the Sahitya Akademi.

Prof Khagendra also stressed on the need for developing a communication link amongst all communities by understanding each others' languages.

IS Kangjam said the Writers' Forum has been giving best efforts for the promotion of tribal dialects in the state.

He said the forum has organised several workshops and translated books in some tribal dialects.

Director of the workshop, BS Rajkumar said the workshop will train representatives of ten tribes of the state on lexicography.

After the workshop, the resource persons will conduct a research on the dialects of the selected ten tribes in order to bring out a dictionary for them.

The dictionary will be English-Manipuri-and the concerned tribal dialect.

He said the three-day workshop is the fifth such project undertaken by the Writers' Forum.
