Dalit Samiti plans state-wide protest

MANGALORE: Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (Ambedkar) will organise a state-wide protest opposing the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and BJP government in the state for betraying dalit communities on March 30.

In a release, Samiti district convener S P Ananda said both parties have not implemented promises made in their election manifestoes during the last general and assembly elections.

Accusing the state government of cutting down facilities for dalit communities in the recent state budget presented by chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, he said it is unfortunate that the government that had money to distribute among religious mutts has no money for the welfare programmes of the poor and downtrodden.

He said the state government had insulted the dalit communities by naming Gulbarga University after Sidhaganga Mutt seer. The Samiti had been fighting for the past 15 years demanding naming the varsity after B R Ambedkar.

Listing out the problems haunting the lives of dalit communities in the state, he said the delay in distribution of ration cards has affected many. Besides, no concrete steps have been initiated to check the increasing number of school dropouts among the dalits, he alleged.
