Dalit youth's attackers arrested

Muzaffarnagar , Feb 18 : Six persons have been arrested under SC/ST Act in connection with the alleged attack on a Dalit youth at Jajpur village in the district.

Police said six persons were arrested yesterday and&aposattempt to murder&aposcharges registered against them over assault on one Barat for the petty issue of dancing in the village on Monday.

The incident had triggered tension in the area, leading to deployment of police there.

In another incident, a retired college professor was shot dead in his house at Charmi village here last night.

Police suspect the murder to be the fallout of some old enmity. The assailants were not arrested.

In a case of suspected custodial death, four policemen, including the then SHO, surrendered before a court today.

Budhana SHO Lalsingh Verma and three constables surrendered before Fast Track Court judge Anil Kumar in connection with the death of Anil Kumar Banian in police custody in December 2002. He was allegedly beaten to death while in custody.

The government had ordered a CB-CID enquiry into the case. The accused were posted in Budhana Jail, where Banian died and the court had issued arrest warrants against them.

The case would come up for hearing on March 5.
