5 held for raping tribal woman

GODHRA: Five persons, who allegedly abducted and raped a tribal woman from Nadisar village of Godhra taluka, were arrested on Wednesday. Taluka police booked 12 people for abetting the crime, following a complaint filed on Tuesday night.

According to officials of taluka police, the 21-year-old woman named Gopal Machhi (28) as the main accused and 11 others as co-accused. "We've arrested Gopal and four of the co-accused Shana Machhi (52), Shiva Machhi (32), Lakshaman Machhi (38), and Kalpesh Machhi (25) who have been sent to Godhra sub-jail by sessions court here," the official said, "The woman alleged that Gopal's associates helped him escape to Ahmedabad and some of them had also raped her."

"Gopal had kidnapped the woman while she was returning to her native place on August 25, 2008 and taken her to Ahmedabad. There he confined her to a place where he had raped her," said a police official. Meanwhile, the taluka police have launched manhunt for the remaining seven accused, who are absconding.
